Flyfishing the open beachfront is a challenge under the best of circumstances. Throw in a bit of swell and wind, and you'd swear it was impossible. Here's Erik trying it anyway.

Wild Goose Chase

The "hex" hatch on Maine ponds is the stuff of legends - huge mayflies bringing the biggest trout in the pond up to the surface to gorge on these massive bugs. Only problem is - it's feast or famine fishing. On this night, we didn't raise a single trout, and saw very few bugs come off. Tally for the evening - three hundred some miles, 6 hours in the car, plenty of paddling in a float tube, and not even a sniff from the trout. I know how good it can be though, so I'll be back.

The boat

Dave Sherwood was kind enough to lend me his boat for the summer, and after some travails with the outboard I'm off and running. This was the first trip on the boat - not a bad start.

The caddis slowed down a bit under the hot midday sun, so Greg decided to try and get some attention with a big stonefly imitation. Stones had been sporadic so far this season, but sometimes a meal that big is too good to pass up.

Relaxing

The caddis came in waves- heavy at times, sparse at others. Here, the boys are waiting out a lull in the action, confident that the show's not over yet.

Lucky Rock

Toby's lucky rock produced a number of nice salmon on dries. After landing this bruiser, Toby was kind enough to let me have a shot at it. I wasn't disappointed.

Getting Late

I had to stop fishing a few minutes before this shot was taken because I couldn't see well enough to track my flyline effectively (I hadn't been able to see my fly for a good half an hour). It's awful hard to walk away from rising trout, even if it is 9:30pm and you haven't eaten dinner yet.

Rafting

While the classic driftboat is more closely associated with flyfishing, many times a raft will open up possibilities that would be difficult or impossible to access any other way.

Uncrowded place

Even in the named pools on the big-name rivers, if you're willing to put up with a bit off hassle it's often possible to feel like you're the only guy on the river.
